Ethics are standards by which one should act based on what?

Values

Ethics are standards for how we should act that come from our values—what we believe to be important or right. Our values shape the judgments we make about what’s fair, honest, respectful, and responsible, and ethics uses those guiding beliefs to evaluate actions. In other words, ethics act as a moral compass rooted in what we personally deem worthy, not merely what is legally required, culturally customary, or procedurally prescribed.

Laws set externally enforceable requirements that aim to keep order and protect rights, but they don’t always capture every moral nuance or personal obligation. Customs reflect what a group tends to do and expect, yet they can vary across cultures and times and aren’t universal standards of right. Rules are specific directives about how to do things, focusing on procedures rather than the underlying reasons those actions are considered good or bad.

Because ethics draw directly from values, they best explain why we choose to act in certain ways even when laws or customs don’t compel us, making values the foundation of ethical behavior.
